    Antigen p57/Kip2 as a potential negative regulator of human astrocytoma growth

    This study was performed to determine the relationship between p57/Kip2 and the growth of human astrocytomas. Immunohistochemical staining for p57/Kip2, p53, p16, and Ki67 antigen was performed on paraffin-embedded tissue specimens obtained from 36 patients with astrocytoma. Expression of p57/Kip2, p53, p16, and Ki67 antigen was generally increased in association with the astrocytoma tumor grade. Expression of p16 was higher in patients whose tumors express p57/Kip2 in greater than 10% of tumor cells (p < 0.05). Expression of p53 also tended to be higher, but not to a statistically significant extent, in patients whose tumors express p57/Kip2 in greater than 10% of tumor cells. These findings suggest that p57/Kip2 inhibits the growth of human astrocytomas, and may function in parallel with p16 and p53.     The effectiveness of colchicine combined with mitomycin C to prolong bleb function in trabeculectomy in rabbits.

    PurposeTo investigate the potential of colchicine to improve bleb function after trabeculectomy.MethodsTo find the maximum usable colchicine concentration, an ocular irritation study was performed with the Draize test at concentrations of 0.001%, 0.01% and 0.1%. Additionally, the synergistic effect of topical colchicine instillation and MMC application to surgical site was evaluated in a rabbit model by measuring changes after trabeculectomy in intraocular pressure (IOP) and bleb morphology score at 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49 days.ResultsExperiments with a rabbit model of trabeculectomy showed that 0.04% MMC plus 0.01% colchicine was more effective than saline and 0.04% MMC alone in maintaining IOP reduction at days 7-49 (P ConclusionColchicine may be a promising adjuvant for strengthening the effect of MMC and improving the survival of the filtering bleb in trabeculectomy

    Recent heavy-ion collision experiments reported a surprisingly short lifetime for the hypertriton, which has been recognized as the hypertriton lifetime puzzle. Our J-PARC E73 experiment contributes to solve this puzzle with an independent experimental method by employing 3He(K−, π0) 3ΛH reaction. In this contribution, we will demonstrate our capability to provide 3ΛH binding energy information by deriving the production cross section ratio, σ3ΛH/σ4ΛH. The production cross section data for 3ΛH and 4ΛH are already available as the pilot run of E73 experiment and data analysis is in progress

    The possible existence of deeply-bound Kˉ\bar K-nuclear bound states, kaonic nuclei, has been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive Kˉ\bar KN interaction in I = 0 channels. Investigations of those exotic states will provide us unique information of the Kˉ\bar KN interaction below the threshold, which is still not fully understood so far. Recently, we observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, Kˉ\bar KNN, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei via inflight (K−, N) reactions at the J-PARC E15 experiment. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from Kˉ\bar KN (Λ(1405)) to Kˉ\bar KNNNN. We will measure the Kˉ\bar KNNN (A = 3) system at the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, as a first step toward a comprehensive study
